Cupping

What Is Cupping Therapy?

Cupping therapy is a therapeutic technique that involves placing specialized cups on the skin to create suction. This suction lifts the skin and underlying tissues, helping to increase blood flow, release muscle tension, improve lymphatic drainage, and stimulate the body’s natural healing response. Cupping is a holistic, non-invasive method with roots in traditional Chinese and Middle Eastern medicine, now widely used in modern physiotherapy and sports rehabilitation for its powerful therapeutic effects.

How Does It Work?

The suction created by the cups pulls blood to the surface of the skin, promoting circulation and oxygenation of tissues. This helps break up fascial adhesions, reduce muscle tightness, and eliminate toxins and metabolic waste that build up in injured or overworked muscles. Cupping can be static (cups remain in place) or dynamic (cups are gently moved across the skin), depending on the treatment goal.

Cupping therapy is an ancient healing practice that has been adapted into modern physiotherapy to help relieve muscle tension, improve circulation, and promote recovery. The technique involves placing specialized cups on the skin to create a gentle suction effect. This suction lifts the skin and underlying tissues, drawing blood to the area, which helps to reduce inflammation, remove metabolic waste, and promote natural healing. There are two main types of cupping used in therapy: dry cupping, where suction is applied without any incisions, and wet cupping, which involves minor skin pricks (less commonly used in clinical physiotherapy). Cupping can be used to treat a variety of conditions, including chronic back and neck pain, muscle stiffness, sports injuries, fibromyalgia, and myofascial tension.

During a session, cups may be left in place for a few minutes or moved along muscle groups for a massage-like effect. Some mild bruising or redness is common and typically resolves within a few days—this is a normal response and often indicates increased blood flow. Cupping is a safe, non-invasive, and drug-free method that enhances the effects of manual therapy and exercise, making it a valuable addition to a comprehensive physiotherapy plan.
